NEWS: World leaders arrive in Dubai for start of COP 28
All eyes are on Expo City as experts gather to discuss urgent plans for fighting climate change.
After months of build-up, today the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 28) officially began at Dubai’s Expo City, with at least 140 heads of state and government leaders from around the world arriving for this critical event.
Emirati officials have said they expect to welcome at least 70,000 attendees over the two week conference for the various environment related talks.
COP is where the world comes together to (hopefully) agree on ways to address the climate crisis, such as limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius – and with 2023 set to be the warmest in 125,000 years, according to European Union scientists, this edition feels extra urgent.
Indeed, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, said that COP28 will be the most important event hosted by the nation in 2023.
Among the international leaders attending are US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the UK’s King Charles and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
