NEWS: Ahead of COP28, the UAE unveils its first wind power program

The pioneering clean energy project is expected to power more than 23,000 homes a year.

As the UAE gears up for hosting the high-profile climate change conference COP28 in Dubai from November, the country has launched a major green initiative of its own, announcing an inaugural ‘wind program’.

The project is being developed by Abu Dhabi clean energy company Masdar and will displace 120,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide. This is equivalent to removing more than 26,000 petrol-powered cars from the roads annually.

Masdar has been at the forefront of this green energy movement, having successfully erected 103.5 megawatts of wind capacity across four strategic sites: Sir Bani Yas Island, Delma Island, and Al Sila in Abu Dhabi, and Al Halah in Fujairah.

This new program will harness cutting-edge technology and advanced aerodynamics to capture even the gentlest of breezes and paves the way for the UAE to diversify its energy mix and transition towards cleaner sources of power. It is expected to power more than 23,000 homes a year.

Masdar tweeted about the announcement saying:

“The inauguration of the #UAE Wind Program utilizes innovative technology to convert low wind speeds into utility-scale clean energy. The project furthers strengthens #decarbonization efforts and accelerates progress towards achieving #UAE #NetZero emissions by 2050.”
